Candidate must have at least 45% marks in the graduation degree.

Note:

Candidates who have not studied any one of the required above-mentioned subjects in their graduation are eligible for MIT admission provided they firstly qualify four courses namely Introduction to Computing, Business Mathematics & Statistics, Calculus and Analytical Geometry and English Comprehension by taking a MCS/MIT Deficiency Semester

However, candidates having less than 45% marks will be eligible for admission after successful completion of “Zero Semester”. Deficiency Semester         

The “Deficiency Semesters” have been introduced to fulfill the entry/ pre-requisite requirements of a degree program. Upon successful completion of area specific courses a candidate can become eligible for subsequent admission towards the desired program.

Zero Semester

The “Zero Semester” has been introduced to provide an opportunity to deprived candidates who have earned their required qualification/ degree as prescribed in admission eligibility criteria of respective programs but do not fulfill minimum marks/ CGPA requirement. Such candidates upon successful completion can become eligible for subsequent admission towards their desired program.

Assessment of Study Progress

The students’ study progress evaluation mechanism is based on continuous assessment throughout the semester by giving assignments, on-line quizzes, Graded Discussion Boards (GDBs), mid-term and final-term exams. The mid and final term exams are conducted at VU’s designated exam centers and usually count for 80 to 85% of the total marks for a course.

Project

Students are required to complete a project of 6 credit hours in the final year of their Master’s degree program. The choice of the final project is at the student’s discretion. However, consultation with the student advisor is compulsory. Students have to submit a detailed write-up of the project and in some cases may be required to give a presentation.

Award of Degree

To be eligible for the award of degree of Master of Information Technology (MIT) students are required to complete courses amounting to at least 72 credit hours with a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average of 2.0 out of 4.00.

Admission requirements

Candidates who have not studied Information Technology/Computer Science as their major subject in their 14 Years graduation or not having achieved the requisite percentage of marks (45% in graduation) as defined by the University’s regulations are eligible for admission in MIT provided they qualify and pass the deficiency semester/Zero Semester.

Such students mentioned above firstly be admitted in Zero semester and after passing all the subjects and acquiring 60% marks (as a whole) in Zero semester are eligible for registration/admission in MIT.

The Master’s degree duration of such students starts after passing the Zero Semester and then will be registered in the 1st semester of MIT.

A student can get a short course certificate for passing Zero Semester but the Zero Semester result does not affect the overall CGPA/grade of the MIT degree program. The result of Zero Semester will not be reflected in final transcript/degree either.

The minimum pass marks for each course in the zero semester shall be 50% and overall 60% in the zero semester shall be declared pass and would be eligible for the formal MIT registration.

3- MIT degree by Punjab University

Located in the heart of Lahore, neighboring the buzzing Anarkali Bazar and the Mall Road, PUCIT is the largest institution of higher learning in Pakistan in Computer Science, Information Technology, and Software Engineering. The College took a modest start with the Center for Computer Science, established in the Center for Solid State Physics, Quaid-e-Azam (New) Campus, Lahore, in 1988. The first degree program offered by the Center was a one-year Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) in Computer Science. 24 students were registered in this program during the first year. The Center was upgraded to Department of Computer Science in 1991. The Department started 2-year (4-semesters) PGD leading to MSc in Computer Science under the annual system. In its first batch, the 15 students were admitted to this program. The number doubled the following year.

The Vice Chancellor, Lt Gen (R) Arshad Mahmood, further upgraded the Department to a constituent College in November 2000. The college was named Punjab University College of Information Technology (PUCIT). The College launched the 4-year (8-semester) BSc (Honors) in Computer Science program in November 2000. The classes of the new BSc (Hons) in Computer Science started in January 2001 with about 180 students. The program was offered on Self-Support basis only.

The PGD leading to MSc in Computer Science was converted to MSc in Computer Science in February 2001. 500 students were admitted to this program during the first (Spring) semester. However, due to the non-availability of sufficient number of classrooms, half of the students were shifted to Fall 2001. About 180 students were admitted in BSc (Hons) Computer Science and 500 in MSc Computer Science for the Fall 2001 semester. The College launched 4-year Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BIT), 2-year Master in Information Technology (MIT), Master in Electronic Commerce (M. E-Com), and 3-year MPhil leading to PhD in Computer Science in Fall 2003. Inter-flooring in the old library building was done in 2003, thereby creating space for the current library. PUCIT established its own Internet Service Provider (ISP) and software house, Agile Technologies, for automating key business processes in the College and bridging the gap between industry and academia. The GIS Center moved to PUCIT in 2004. The Free and Open Source Software Awareness Campaign (FOSSAC) was held at PUCIT in August 2005.

Introduction

The MS (Computer Science) comprises course work and research component. It has four ‘core courses’ aimed at strengthening the understanding and competence in computer science fundamentals. The University expects its MS graduates to pursue careers either as ‘Computer Science Faculty Members’ or as ‘Software Development Managers’ in the industry.

A student has the option to pursue MS by undertaking either a 6 credit hour MS Thesis or MS Project, spread over two regular semesters.

Award of Degree

For the award of MS degree, a student must have:

  • Passed courses totalling at least 31 credit hours, including all those courses which have been specified as Core courses
  • Obtained a CGPA of at least 2.5

Note 1: – Applied Programming course is of No Credit (NC), but it must be passed.

Note 2: – Research Methodology is a One Credit-hour course, but of three contact hours.

Note 3: – Registration in “MS Thesis-I/ Project-I” is allowed provided the student has earned at least 12 credits and his/her CGPA is equal to or greater than the graduating CGPA (2.5).
